Bus Lane Jakarta – Solution For Malaysia Too?

A viral video of Jakarta’s protected bus lanes has sparked the question of whether it’ll be a good idea for Malaysia to have one too.

The general problem with buses in Malaysia is that while they are one of the most accessible forms of public transport, they don’t seem to get you to your destination any faster than a private vehicle – as they share the same congested roads with every other vehicle.

In Jakarta, Indonesia however, it seems like they have found a solution for this problem, as the buses there travel in a protected bus lane.

What is a protected bus lane?

A protected bus lane is bus specific lane which allows buses to travel from one place to another without being stuck in traffic. These lanes allow buses to travel free of traffic, making them more efficient, just like rail transport systems such as the LRT and MRT.

Transformative Urban Mobility, an organisation that strives to transform mobility for the better for all,  recently showcased these protected bus lanes in Jakarta on Twitter, which has gained a million views since it was posted.

Malaysian netizens who commented on the video were mainly impressed with the protected bus lanes, where some of them reckon that this could be a great solution to our traffic woes.

So…protected bus lane in Malaysia?

Of course, a protected bus lane in Malaysia would help our buses travel more freely, but creating and implementing protected bus lanes in our country is easier said than done.

As one netizen commented, “Malaysia is a very car-centric country”. If we were to create protected bus lanes, it would mean reducing lanes for other vehicles, possibly creating more congestion for private vehicles. This will not go down well with the majority of motorists in Malaysia as it means they will just face more congestion and longer travel times.

And then there is the problem of those naughty Malaysian motorists who just seem to disregard traffic laws where we can see them travelling in those bus lanes to beat the traffic. If they freely travel in emergency lanes, we’re pretty sure they’ll do the same in a protected bus lane.

Malaysia is invested in building more roads and train lines

Anyhow, judging by how the Malaysian government is investing in mega projects such as the creation of new MRT and LRT lines as well as new highways in the Klang Valley, it can be said that they believe that trains and more highways are the solutions for our traffic congestion woes.

What do you think? Should the government consider building protected bus lanes? Or is it just not suitable for Malaysia?

Proton Lancar smart #1 Tahun 2023 – SUV Elektrik, Jarak Perjalanan Lebih 500 km

BMW Malaysia Launches The i4 M50 – RM431k

As we mentioned earlier, BMW Malaysia is celebrating BMW M’s 50th anniversary, and as part of the celebration, they have launched five new M cars, including the hotly anticipated first-ever fully electric M car, the i4 M50.

2022 BMW i4 M50 launched in Malaysia

The BMW i4 M50 is the first M-badged electric vehicle to come out of Munich. According to BMW, it sets the foundation for the future of sporty BMW EVs – one that is both sustainable and responsible without disregarding the emotional driving experience that many have come to love in a BMW M.

Exterior and Interior of the 2022 i4 M50

In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of BMW M, the i4 M50 will arrive with the BMW M 50 Years emblem as standard. The car’s sporty character can be seen through the standard equipment, including the M Aerodynamics package, M rear spoiler in body colour, and black rear diffuser insert.

On the inside, the BMW i4 M50 is furnished with M interior trim with Carbon Fibre trim finishing, M Anthracite Headliner, and features as such M Sport seats at the front, M seat belts, instrument panel in Sensatec, and electrical glass roof. The BMW IconicSounds Electric also provides for a particularly emotive experience by recreating the sporty “M” engine sound.

Performance and range of the 2022 i4 M50

BMW Malaysia Launches 2022 M3 and M4 Competition M xDrive – from RM823k

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of BMW M, BMW Malaysia has welcomed five new high-performance models to the local BMW M portfolio, including the M3 Competition and M4 Competition.

The new BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition
BMW M’s all-electric debut – the BMW i4 M50.

Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia said, “We are thrilled to be celebrating five remarkable decades of M with the introduction of five new high-performance premium models for our loyal customers, fans, as well as premium motorsports enthusiasts in Malaysia.”

“I cannot see a more fitting way to celebrate this golden anniversary for M than to introduce to all our Malaysian customers and enthusiasts the first ever BMW i4 M50 amongst our highly anticipated fleet of high-performance vehicles,” said Hans.

As part of the celebration, BMW Malaysia is also conducting a nationwide search for the oldest BMW M models across the entire model series. Classic BMW M owners are encouraged to submit details of their vehicles here by 8th June 2022, to win exclusive BMW M merchandise and a feature by BMW Group Malaysia.

2022 BMW M3 Competition and BMW M4 Competition with M xDrive

The New BMW M3 Competition Sedan and BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive mark the first time the M-specific all-wheel-drive system is made available beyond the BMW M5 and BMW M8.

The system channels the engine’s power to all four wheels and gives the car M performance characteristics – which in a nutshell, helps give the vehicle better acceleration as well as better traction on wet surfaces.

The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system

The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system is deliberately rear-wheel bias, where power is only channelled to the rear during everyday driving – but when the vehicle reaches its traction limits, the system sends power to the front wheels as well.

The Active M differential at the rear axle complements the all-wheel-drive system, as it splits the engine’s power between the two rear wheels ensuring noticeably better traction, agility, and directional stability with differing levels of grip.

The M xDrive also allows the driver to tailor the all-wheel-drive system via three different driving modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD mode.

Performance of the S58

A BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine is at the heart of the two cars, paired to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The engine’s output is rated at 510 hp and 650 Nm of torque, giving the cars the ability to achieve a century sprint in 3.5 seconds.

Exterior and Interior 2022 BMW M3 and M4

As part of BMW’s lightweight construction, the roof on both vehicles is made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). This helps to lower the vehicles’ centre of gravity, enhancing their agility.

On the inside, the M Drive Professional which has been developed specifically for track driving helps the driver analyse data in their pursuit of the perfect lap by tracking and recording a myriad of performance data.

Customisation and optional equipment including exterior colours, interior upholstery, interior trim, driving assistance, and M Performance Parts amongst others, can be added at special rates later via the online configurator for the new models.

Hyundai Opens Concept Showroom In Penang’s Gurney Paragon Mall

Hyundai opens concept showroom in Penang’s Gurney Paragon Mall – to provide greater accessibility and a new lifestyle shopping experience.

Manufacturers and dealers apply various strategies to get closer to consumers. The recent opening of Hyundai’s concept showroom in Penang’s Gurney Paragon Mall shows that Hyundai really wants to provide buyers with an all-new experience.

Hyundai Concept Showroom

According to Hyundai, the showroom in a mall was created to provide greater accessibility and a new lifestyle shopping experience for its customers.

“Hyundai is revolutionising the way cars are sold by engaging customers more personally. We believe that the public will be drawn to a more relaxed and cosier environment. They can check out our latest models and shop for their favourite merchandise at ease,” said Mr. Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd.

Modern design, equipped with an interactive wall

By opening the concept showroom in a mall where footfall is higher, Low said this would help to elevate brand awareness for Hyundai and ultimately drive sales.

The Hyundai Penang City Store has been done up to be inviting and is laced with modern and chic interior design. The showroom also has a digitalised interactive wall, straight out of the future.

In addition to displaying the latest Hyundai models, the new showroom also offers digitalised service for the public to experience the “look and feel” of their desired cars using a car configurator.

There’s even an EV charger at the basement

Hyundai also took the opportunity to install an AC charging station at Basement 2 of Gurney Paragon Mall for the convenience of Hyundai electric vehicle owners who frequent the mall. The charging station operates daily during the mall operation hours from 10 am to 10 pm.

The Hyundai Penang City Store is a 1S centre, and buyers who purchase their cars from the showroom will be supported by Sime Darby Auto Hyundai’s full-fledged service centre, located nearby at Jalan Sungai Pinang for all their service and repair needs.

Buy from the mall but service at Hyundai’s 4s centre

Apart from offering the usual preventive maintenance services, other services are also offered at the full-fledged Jalan Pinang branch, including air-conditioning service, body and paint restoration, collision repair and insurance claims, and vehicle insurance renewal.

For the comfort and convenience of customers, the service centre also comes with a customer lounge that is equipped with Wi-Fi and a refreshments corner. In addition, quick service is also offered to customers who require basic servicing for their cars.

Lebuh Raya Pan Borneo Dijangka Siap 2028 – Projek Makan Masa 65 Tahun Untuk Disiapkan

Projek Dipercepat Selesai Isu Jalan Rosak

Still No ADAS – 5 New Features For The 2022 Proton Saga To Say Sorry

As the current-generation Proton Saga enters its second facelift (called MC2), we examine its a continuing lack of active safety features and what could be done to make the sting less painful.

I know it kinda sucks to realise that Perodua has been offering features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (Pre-Collision Braking) and Pedestrian Detection in the Bezza since early 2020 and the smaller Axia in latter 2019.

Seemingly unfazed, the Saga continues to soldier on and is enjoying pretty steady success as one of Malaysia’s favourite small sedans, ‘making do with the tried and true’ – as this writer puts it.

That theme runs deeper still; its 1.3-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder is essentially an evolution of the CamPro, an engine that debuted in production form nearly 20 years ago. Even architecturally, the MC2’s roots remain planted in the second-generation Saga BLM from 2008, which itself used an altered version of the Savvy’s underpinnings.

We all know the X70 and X50 have these ADAS features and more such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring, and a 360-degree camera, but these are, along with the rest of those models, the result of a technology transfer from Geely.

Retrofitting these advanced systems along with all their required sensors, processing units, and auxiliary electronic components is not something easily done, which is the primary reason behind its continued absence in cars such as the Saga, Exora, and Persona. It also costs a lot of money in research and development, which can’t help but trickle down into its showroom sticker price – an unforgivable sin.

Still, that doesn’t rule out the possibility that they could still sweeten the deal in other ways. By this point, Malaysians are plenty familiar with – even expecting – Proton cars to be a little lacking on paper and willing to be forgiving. So, let’s take a look at some ideas that could increase the Saga’s appeal without involving ADAS.

For this little thought experiment, we’ll use the car in its range-topping Premium S form for 2022, which is on sale for RM44,300. It’s worth mentioning that its fiercest rival is the Perodua Bezza 1.3 X, a car that’s nearly an exact spec-twin of 1.3 AV, but without the active safety additions, but is on sale now for RM42,551. Here we go:

1 – Auto Down/Up Power Windows

Let’s start small. This might seem like a trivial feature but if you’re the type to still use Touch n’ Go cards for toll and/or parking, having to keep your finger on the button to fully open or close the window is downright irritating.

As Proton’s cars have been doing for a very long time, the 2022 Saga Premium S only sports automatic retraction, not closing, for its driver side power window. As a bonus, they could also give the front passenger an auto down-only window.

2 – Tyre Pressure Monitoring

This one is another easy addition that’ll gain it some brochure brownie points. The everyday utility of TPMS is up for debate but being able to actively monitor tyre pressures can be invaluable in certain situations, alerting you of a slow puncture before you’re left stranded with a completely flat tyre.

Aftermarket solutions are full of affordable and easy to use TPMS systems and, ironically, we’re pretty sure we’ve even received a kit as a door gift for a Proton event some time ago. Saving a customer the hassle of having to purchase a 3rd party solution while presenting the feature in a more integrated manner (via the infotainment screen) could do wonders in endearing buyers further into the brand.

3 – Built-In Digital Video Recorder (Dashcam)

Here is one more feature-add from the aftermarket and a very popular first ‘upgrade’ for any car owner. Unlike TPMS, the real world usefulness of having a dashcam is very well known.

A casual search online reveals an almost overwhelming selection of front-mounted video recorders that could be a (figurative) lifesaver when it comes to proving your innocence in the event of a collision.

It sure beats arguing for it with the insurance company, so why not have Proton (even as a cost option) fit a proper DVR solution at the factory or dealership level and have it neatly installed and integrated into – again – the onboard infotainment system.

4 – Android Auto, Apple CarPlay

This one might be a little too pricey and asking a little too much but it sure would be a power move to leave Perodua with a bloody nose. Proton does tout some level of smartphone connectivity with the Saga’s 7-inch touchscreen head unit, but that’s a band-aid solution compared to full Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

It would make Proton the first Malaysian automaker to support the feature but would likely require some additional cooperation from their infotainment hardware and software supplier. To our knowledge, the Saga uses an interface built on an older version of Android, possibly making it even easier to implement given how easily off-the-shelf Android head units can ‘unlock’ tethered smartphone connectivity with an aftermarket USB dongle add-on.

5 – Kenwood Speakers?

Budget B-segment sedans aren’t exactly expected to have anything but basic audio quality but the Saga could be the exception, especially since this is likely to be the final iteration before a full-on Geely replacement.

The Premium S arrives with a generic array of ‘4-speakers’ that may or may not be decent. However, even as a cost option, it would be appreciated if Proton offered our ears some better treatment. Granted, Kenwood’s ‘premium’ speakers in the X70 facelift were pretty disappointing, all things considered.

If that’s too much of a name brand, even Edifier or Sonic Gear will do (if they do car audio). A little extra effort will go a long way here given the track record of audio quality at this price range, but contributes so much to the in-car experience.

Proton is stuck between a rock and hard place whenever asked about this product disparity, their sales associates are forced to insist that its combination of anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, electronic brake force distribution, and few airbags are as sufficient as they have been for….well, 20 years.

It’s clear these far newer features will not be coming from Proton so far as their legacy vehicles are concerned. To get cars like the Saga and Persona over this line, they need a total reinvention, and/or just a big kick in the back. Only (truly) all-new models or named replacements of Geely origin.

As the Saga fights the good fight, as these proposed feature additions can only strengthen its arsenal, we can look forward to the possibility that all-new Proton models are, by the automaker’s own admission, just on the horizon.

Sejauh Mana Kebenaran Ini?

Vehicle Sales 2022: April Slumps Amid Chip Shortage

As usual, numbers gathered and published by the Malaysian Automotive Association are the best guesses with April’s numbers slumping due to the chip shortage.

Like clockwork, their neatly tabulated digits were released for the month that elapsed, showing that the encouraging performance seen in March was not maintained. That said, the industry is faring better than it did in 2021, unsurprising as that is.

April 2022 MAA Sales Numbers

The month of April 2022 saw 49,815 passenger cars and 6,398 commercial vehicles sold (56,213 total) in contrast to, respectively, 65,137 and 7,320 units in March 2022 (73,222 total), taking the year-to-date sum to 215,965.

This was somewhat anticipated given the fact that, as a general practice, many car brands in Malaysia have laboured to aggressively push vehicle sales to meet their own targets for the financial year ending March 31st.

Do note that this does not mean there aren’t plenty of us out there excited to purchase a new car as bookings do not factor into the April data but only count upon vehicle delivery. This downtrend was expected to end given the typical Hari Raya surge, but clearly, that has not materialised.

Global semiconductor shortage

Far from being a local issue, the ongoing global semiconductor shortage is the primary contributor to these middling numbers. Basically, despite strong consumer sentiment and demand, automakers are struggling to keep production numbers sufficiently high.

Add to this the rising global oil prices and geopolitical instabilities that have resulted in supply chain disruptions, delays in shipment and transport, more expensive raw materials, and higher production costs in general.

The good news is that those outside factors that previously held the automotive industry in such a stranglehold are gradually loosening their grip – the world has mostly put the COVID-19 pandemic behind it, for example.

However, seeing the positive impact in terms of production output to meet sales demand is something that will take place over the longer term. The MAA, therefore, anticipates vehicle sales in May 2022 to echo that of April.
