What Are Fully Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic And Mineral Engine Oil?

What’s the difference between a mineral, semi and fully synthetic engine oil? Which one is right for you?

If you want to talk about getting the most out of your ownership experience with a car, one of the best ways to improve longevity is to pick a good engine oil. Oil happens to be the lifeblood of the engine as it lubricates engine components and reduces friction.

The one you select can greatly impact how quickly (or slowly) an engine wears out. Engine wear is an unavoidable fact of life, and all we can really do is slow it down or mitigate it.

If you don’t know much about engine oils and wonder what you should be using on your car, you’ve come to the right place, as this article will discuss the different types of engine oil and their pros and cons.

There are technically two types of engine oils in the market, namely mineral and synthetic. But in 1966, legendary engine oil manufacturer Motul introduced a more affordable version of fully-synthetic oil, called semi-synthetic.

So which one should you choose? Let’s discuss it down below.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oils are directly derived from refined crude petroleum oil. They are the cheapest because there’s not much engineering going into them. The only refinement process that goes through it is the removal of natural contaminants and unwanted hydrocarbons.

For running-in freshly built engines, a good mineral oil is important as it allows the various components to bed in properly. But because they do not have additives, their molecular structures break down fast, so you need to change them frequently.

Fully Synthetic

Fully Synthetic oils are chemically modified oils with additives and have fewer impurities. The additives are added to suit what an engine needs such as good flow at low temperatures and stable viscosity at high temperatures.

There’s no debate that fully synthetic oil is the best kind of oil to put in your engine, regardless of age or design. It usually has the most additives and is the most resistant to temperature and abuse, so it would be our oil grade of choice whether dealing with a 30-year-old classic car, or a brand new Honda HR-V.

Semi-synthetic

Semi-synthetic oil is more expensive than mineral oil but cheaper than fully synthetic. The simple reason for this is that they are a mix of the two.

Although they can provide the same protection features as fully synthetic oils, they are less potent than fully synthetic oils. As a result, they are often used as an economical alternative to fully synthetic oils for people that do not need a maximum amount of performance and engine protection. They are commonly used in high-mileage engines, as the engine deterioration has already taken its course in high-mileage cars.

Buyer Beware

What has been increasingly common lately are fake oils entering the market – especially on online platforms. These oils are being sold for surprisingly low prices and can in fact damage your engine if you’re not careful. Always make sure that you’re getting your oil from a reputable source as you will have no idea what the actual oil content is in a fake product.

The same can go with oil filters, which we recommend changing with every oil change as well. Filters have a big impact on keeping your oil clean, and between a fake and an original filter, there is a huge difference in actual filtering ability. Some aftermarket filters boast longer service intervals but we recommend against them as there is no guarantee that they are 100% effective.

Malaysia Will Have A New Budget Airline Soon Called MYAirline

Malaysia will soon have a new budget airline called MYAirline to cater to the demands of low-cost flights which will most likely start in October.

Following its operator’s certificate (AOC) approval issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia earlier this month, MYAirline is gearing up for its first flight within the final quarter of 2022.

Three Airbus A320-200 for domestic flights

MYAirline will start its operations and services with three Airbus A320-200 aircraft which will provide domestic flights within the country. According to Rayner Teo, MYAirline’s CEO, they only have a few steps left before the planes can officially go up in the air scheduled for October.

The craziness behind it all was actually starting up the budget airline in October 2020 during the rise of COVID-19 around the globe. It seems that their business plan will start to pay off as more demands for affordable flights rose upon Malaysia entering the endemic phase.

Regional & international flights in the works

MYAirline will kick things off with domestic offerings, but if the demand is there, they will most likely venture into regional and international destinations as well. Currently, there is no news on the first few local destinations they have in store.

For international flights, if they do decide to offer them, will most likely cover a flight range under the four hours mark to keep with its entire operations on offering low-cost air travel solutions. As for the planes themselves, they are now under lease with over 300 staff and 45 pilots on its payroll.

CONFIRMED: BYD Is Coming To Malaysia Through Sime Darby Motors

Earlier this month, we reported that Sime Darby Motors might potentially bring China’s BYD brand into Malaysia.

That news has now been confirmed after Sime Darby Motors officially signed a Distribution Agreement with BYD as the official distributor for the Malaysian market. Is this the beginning of more affordable EVs here in the country? We sure hope so!

Which BYD EV model to come in first?

In the first stage of the BYD brand inception in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors will focus on bringing in two key BYD EV models – the Atto 3 compact SUV and the e6 crossover/compact MPV.

The final quarter of 2022 will be an interesting time as several news portals have indicated that around 2,000 units of the BYD Atto 3 will be entering Malaysia. There are two variants of the Atto 3 with different BYD Blade EV battery capacities – 49.92kWh (410km NEDC) and 60.48kWh (480km NEDC).

Firepower comes in the form of a front-mounted electric motor that produces 210hp and 310Nm of torque. The next obvious question would be the pricing once it’s available here in Malaysia. Our educated guess would be somewhere around the RM100,000-RM150,000 mark and if this is true, the Atto 3 can be the kickstarter model for a wider population due to its affordability.

Sime Darby Motors ready to lead Malaysia’s EV push

According to Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors, “BYD is the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles and this partnership will bring BYD’s expertise to the Malaysian market through a wide range of EV models. Our collaboration with BYD is one of the steps Sime Darby Motors is taking towards our aim of becoming a leader in EV. This is also aligned with the Malaysian government’s push towards low carbon mobility.”

Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, commented, “Malaysia is a key market for our expansion, as there are vast opportunities for the EV ecosystem to grow and evolve. Given its proven track record and well-established presence in the automotive sector in the Asia Pacific region, we look forward to partnering with Sime Darby Motors to serve Malaysia’s growing EV demand.”

Pandu X50, Tapi Nak Tol Free – Pemandu Ditahan Miliki Tol Tertunggak RM57.50

Proton X50 Tak Bayar Tol

Bagaimana Tunggakan Tol Berlaku?

Kesimpulannya tol wajib dibayar, tak kiralah anda guna kereta apa sekalipun.

iCarData: The Best Time To Buy/Sell – Mercedes-Benz C200 Avantgarde (2017)

Between the big two German luxury automakers in Malaysia, there has always been a tug of war when it comes to the hearts of consumers, as well as a somewhat predictable cycle of appeal and popularity. With the rather strong introduction of the refreshed A-Class model range back in 2013, Mercedes-Benz saw a massive increase in popularity, especially among a younger, fresher audience.

Following that formula, they revised their model range, and with that came the W205-generation C-Class, which proved to be quite a remarkable hit globally as well as locally. Since then it has been replaced by the W206, but over the course of its 7-year model run, it was made available in a number of different variants that were added and removed over the course of time.

W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Variants and powertrains

The brunt of the variants were powered by a singular turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol power plant in various states of tune, but there were also hybrid variants in the form of the C350e, as well as the more potent AMG models that you could get in Mercedes-AMG C43 and C63 flavours. At the other end of the spectrum was the C180 – the only variant to come with a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol unit.

Still though, what proved one of the most popular variants was the simplest of the 2.0-litre models: the C200 Avantgarde. With deliveries of the W206-generation C-Class trickling out, does it make sense to look at the previous generation model? Does it remain a value proposition? We explore it in detail below.

As mentioned before, the C200 Avantgarde was on the more budget-friendly end of the C-Class spectrum. It packed a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine pushing 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque – not mind-blowing figures, but certainly no slouch either. The 2017 model year introduced a few changes, namely cosmetic upgrades in the form of larger wheels and a bit of de-chroming, as well as a significant technical upgrade with the newer 9G-Tronic automatic transmission.

Back in 2017, the C200 Avantgarde also saw a mild price bump in its retail price, pushing it up to          RM253,888. It happened to also be the cheaper of the two C200 variants, with the C200 Exclusive coming with a different look and a few additional cosmetic items and features such as adaptive high beams and a sunroof. The Avantgarde styling is a more minimalist approach that’s been common on Mercedes-Benz products over the last three generations in an effort to distance itself from its more traditional multi-slat grille from the past.

Here’s the breakdown:

Mercedes-Benz C200 Avantgarde 2017

Being one of the more popular German luxury cars in our market, it’s no surprise to still see these models on the road in a variety of different trim levels. The C200 Avantgarde was just a step above entry-level, giving you a little more shove and a little more luxury for a little bit more money. It wasn’t quite as decked out as the more expensive variants of the C-Class, but enough that you could tell you were definitely in a premium vehicle.

Through our collected data over the last five years, we can examine the depreciation of the C200 Avantgarde from the year it was launched, up until the pricing that you can see now. The first year of depreciation always hits the hardest, and in this case, it was a whopping 16% of the total price of the car, or just under RM 40,000.

From here, depreciation sees a relatively steady percentage change until the fourth year of ownership, after which the selling price stabilises with roughly 34% total depreciation over the final three years of the collected data.

Mercedes-Benz C200 Avantgarde 2017: Depreciation and best time to buy

We can interpret this in a couple of ways. The first is that it would make sense to purchase your C200 Avantgarde at four years old to avoid the largest hits in depreciation. However, through 2021 and 2022, the slowdown of car deliveries and global supply chain issues, on the whole, resulted in an artificial car price inflation, so one cannot expect this price to be the floor price for the C200 Avantgarde.

However, it must be said that traditionally, cars in this segment don’t fall a great deal further in terms of residual value. The predecessor to this C200 Avantgarde surprisingly tends to bottom out around the RM 60,000 mark (even at the 10-year-old mark), and with more technology and luxury packaged in this model, you can expect higher residual values too.

There are plenty of reasons for you to purchase a C200 Avantgarde, and it all comes down to your perspective and individual needs. It’s a great introduction to the Mercedes-Benz model family, if compact cars in the form of the A-Class family aren’t quite your thing, and it comes with that hefty technological step forward from the previous generation models that makes ownership and operation much easier.

On the other hand, if you’re an existing Mercedes-Benz owner, it would be a great addition to your garage as a reliable fallback – perhaps something you may provide for a very lucky child if they prove they can be responsible enough. It has all the safety systems and luxuries one would want, without a dangerous amount of power to handle.

Perhaps the only sore point would be the fact that the newer Mercedes-Benz models come with an even larger leap forward in terms of infotainment and interior design – especially with the MBUX system coming standard with the successor to this model. The dual-screen layout and overall connectivity improvements are certainly reasons to spring for a newer model – but one also can’t argue with a price difference of over RM 200,000 to a four-year-old W205 C200 Avantgarde.

Caj Tol Maksimum Dikenakan Jika Tak Ikut Lorong Tol Yang Betul – Touch n’ Go

Caj Tol Maksimum Secara Automatik Akan Dikenakan

Menurut Touch n’ Go, caj tol maksimum akan dikenakan secara automatik jika kad Touch ‘n Go tidak digunakan dengan betul, seperti;

SUKE’s Grand Saga Highway Exit Congestion To Be Reviewed

The Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) will be looking into making some changes to its exit ramp down to the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (CKE or Grand Saga).

A lot of complaints have gone viral on social media regarding the exit ramp design that leads directly to the PGA/Jalan Medan Masria traffic light. Currently, the ramp’s single wide lane has caused some worries regarding safety as well as congestion even outside of peak hours.

Reduction of queue period at the traffic light

Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) has released a statement regarding the possible solution of converting it into two lanes to help reduce the traffic light queue period and congestion. That way, more cars can exit onto the Grand Saga highway even during peak hours.

According to the statement, “The review will be done together with the concession company of Cheras-Kajang Expressway (CKE) to review the overall traffic light’s configuration including one nearby Maktab PDRM (Kuala Lumpur Royal Malaysia Police College) that is also under its jurisdiction.”

More updates to prevent traffic backlog

As more feedback are gathered from real-world users, more changes will be implemented by both SUKE and CKE to further prevent any more traffic backlog. This includes adding two ‘no right turn’ at the junction to CKE – one at the junction itself and the other around 200m further up.

As for the slip road near Jalan Cheras to Jalan Medan Maria, that is now labelled as ‘partially completed’. Its overall completion is expected to be done by the end of February 2023.

Nismo Unveils 2023 Nissan Z GT4 Track Car

Nissan together with Nismo has unveiled the Nissan Z GT4 track car based on the all-new Nissan Z.

Extensively modified for competition use under the Nismo Racing Division, the Nissan Z GT4 will be competing in a number of GT4 categories, namely the Fuji 24 Hour Race, Super Taikyu Series, and many more come 2023.

Tuned VR30DDTT engine for racing

Nismo went to town with the Nissan Z’s VR30DDTT engine with its own specialised tuning, but they have yet to reveal its overall power output for the track (stock is around 400hp & 375Nm of torque). Other notable modifications were done for its chassis and suspension to handle severe competitions and races, plus those sweet Rays/Nismo 18-inch rims wrapped with some sticky Pirelli P Zero rubbers.

Perhaps its most visible change is the number of aerodynamic enhancements that are allowable within the racing regulations. At the same time, Nissan and Nismo made sure that the driver’s cockpit is versatile enough to accommodate all types of drivers, making it an accessible race car for enthusiasts and yet exciting enough for hardcore professional racers.

More details to be announced in November

Nissan also stated that the Nissan Z GT4 will be presented in full at the upcoming 2022 SEMA Show which will run its course from 1-4 November 2022. We’re guessing that they will start receiving orders soon as the deliveries of the Nissan Z GT4 will begin within the first half of 2023.

According to Nissan COO, Ashwani Gupta, “Motorsports for Nissan is an expression of our passion and unrivaled expertise. The Nissan Z continues to maintain its position as an exciting sports car that fascinates drivers with its driving dynamics and flexible powertrain. We are confident that this track-ready GT4-category Nissan Z will be ready to write another chapter in the Nissan Z’s 50-plus-year legacy of speed.”

2023 BMW XM Debut – BMW’s New M Flagship Car Is A Hybrid V8 SUV

The BMW XM is a 2.7 tonne 644hp SUV that’ll serve as BMW’s new flagship M car.

When you think of BMW M Cars, you think of the M3, M5 and even perhaps the M6. Of course, with SUVs dominating the world these days, it’s no surprise that everything is SUV oriented, however, never in a million years did we think that BMW would call an SUV their flagship vehicle, let alone M’s new flagship vehicle.

M’s new flagship car is an SUV

The Bavarian automaker has just unveiled the BMW XM, a 2.7-tonne performance SUV that produces 644hp and 800Nm of torque from its hybrid twin-turbo V8 engine. It will only be available exclusively as an M car and is meant to serve as M’s new flagship vehicle.

According to BMW, the XM, which is due to go on sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2023, will debut BMW’s new electrified V8 power unit, which means that its 25.7-kWh battery pack will give the car an electric driving range of 80 kilometres. BMW also said that a more powerful version of the XM under the Label Red would come later, with a claimed performance figure of 735 hp and 1000Nm of torque.

Bigger than an X5 smaller than an X7

Size-wise, the XM is larger than the X5 and X6 but smaller than the 7-seater X7. At the front of the XM, there’s the recognisable oversized BMW kidney grille which is illuminated, and the headlights must be one of the squintiest split headlights we’ve seen on a BMW.

There’s a strong character line at the side of the car, but one cannot help but notice that that line kicks up when it reaches the rear door, which is typical of BMWs that pay tribute to the classic BMW Hofmeister kink.

The XM features vertically stacked tailpipes

The rear of the XM seems plain at first sight, but look closer, and you’ll see what BMW calls the “Revolutionary Apron” with vertically stacked, hexagonal M twin tailpipes. To accompany this sporty look is a set of aggressive-looking long and slim taillights which wrap around the sides.

Interior fit for a celebrity

On the inside, the XM will be made up of top-quality materials such as leather, velvet, and carbon fibre. The front area is fully driver-focused, while the M Lounge rear compartment offers luxurious comfort, according to BMW. If the M Lounge rear seats don’t give the car’s interior the wow factor, then the “Illuminated Sculptural Prism Roof” with ambient mood lighting will surely do the job.

The XM will not come with air suspension, but instead, will feature adaptive dampers and good ol’ steel springs. Other standard equipment that gives the XM its zing includes an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, and an electronically controlled anti-roll bar.

The price of the XM will start at a cool RM740k, with the more powerful Red Label version coming in at RM855k. The XM will go up against the likes of the Audi RSQ8 and Mercedes-AMG GLE63, and perhaps even the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus.

Like it or not, this is the future of M Cars, where an SUV is the flagship vehicle.
