3rd-gen Honda HR-V goes hybrid, to go on sale in Europe late 2021

Honda has just unveiled the third iteration of its HR-V crossover. This time, the model highlights are its minimalist coupe-inspired style, and hybrid powertrain that “represents another step in Honda’s commitment to electrify all its mainstream models in Europe by 2022.”

The all-new hybrid HR-V will be powered by e:Hev hybrid technology, comprised of two compact electric motors connected to a 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine. The engine has a peak power output from the propulsion motor of 131hp and maximum torque of 253Nm at 4,500rpm.

The e:Hev includes three drive modes — automatically selected for the prevailing driving requirements.

The HR-V pulls off in electric mode, then the electric motor and engine work together to power the car. The gasoline engine solely takes care of propulsion duties during higher, more constant speeds, Honda said.

Honda added that the driving dynamics can be enhanced through the various performance modes of Sport, Normal and Econ, while the additional drive mode B can be selected through the gear shifter for stronger regenerative braking and a more EV-like experience.

The level of energy regeneration and the strength of the deceleration effect can be adjusted to suit the driver’s preference by using its Deceleration Selector behind the steering wheel, to provide a variety of driving experiences.

Regenerative braking gets the energy used by the all-new HR-V when braking, as additional power when acceleration is done once again.

The compact coupe-inspired shape is familiar yet “exciting in appearance, with a playful character and confident SUV stance.” Ground clearance is up by 10 millimeters, and roof height is trimmed by 20 millimeters compared to the previous model.

Increasing the size of the wheels to 18 inches, which come as standard on the all-new HR-V, and reducing the front overhang, pushes the SUV appeal, Honda added.

Although overall vehicle dimensions are similar to the previous model, Honda said this new HR-V offers greater legroom and shoulder space. In addition to the rear legroom increase, there is an additional two-degree recline enabled by Honda’s center tank layout and clever packaging of hybrid components.

The platform configuration also allows Honda to retain the exceptionally versatile rear Magic Seat set-up, that offers both fold-flat or flip-up seat flexibility, depending on load space required.

The clever packaging and Magic Seats, a lower tailgate edge, tailgate aperture, low, flat cargo floor all work in unison to provide easy access to the crossover.

The resulting cargo space can easily accommodate a wide variety of luggage and lifestyle-related equipment. For example, two adult mountain bikes (with the front wheels removed) can be loaded and stowed upright with ease.

Loading convenience is enhanced by a hands-free Power Tailgate Walk Away Close function. This feature detects when the key is moving away from the car, to automatically starts closing the tailgate.

The all-new HR-V also boasts an improved Honda Sensing safety kit. Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering System and the Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS), now detects oncoming vehicles crossing the path of the car, including cyclists and motorcycles, and applies the brakes.

Honda said the HR-V e:Hev will be available in Europe in late 2021.
