Aston Martin Valhalla given the F1 recipe in its development, 999 units to enter production in 2024

The development of Aston Martin’s upcoming plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supercar, Valhalla, will be the first to be injected with the Formula 1 DNA through a technical crossover between Aston Martin and Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One team (AMF1), before the model begins production next year.

Methodologies, experience, and technologies used by the AMF1 team are being adopted into the development of Aston Martin Valhalla to bring enhancements in several key areas including driving dynamics, aerodynamics, as well as materials. Aston Martin Performance Technologies (AMPT), the consulting arm of the team, is directly assisting the marque’s performance engineering team to achieve these areas of development.

As a start, Valhalla is fitted with a twin-turbo flat-plane 4.0-liter V8 engine mounted on the read-mid section, mated with 3 electric motors to generate a combined output of 1,012 PS/1,000 Nm in an all-wheel drive hybrid powertrain. The hybrid Valhalla can sprint to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds with a top speed of 350 km/h.

Two electric motors on the front axle enable Valhalla to not only feature four-wheel drive, it also enables electric reverse as well as electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. The third motor, on the other hand, is integrated into the transmission, providing additional power to the rear wheels as well as acting as the starter/generator for the ICE engine.

With the addition of AMF1 in its development, the hybrid supercar could turn into something formidable on the road. The first running prototype will hit the road later this year before its limited production of 999 units commences next year.

Driving dynamics – Driver-focused with F1 ergonomics

Valhalla is designed to be a supercar focused on the driver’s experience. It draws inspiration from Formula 1 for its racing-inspired driving position. To achieve this, the driver’s heels are elevated using a raised floor that also houses electronic components. The unique carbon fiber bucket seat can be adjusted to a more reclined angle, resembling the seating position in the AMR23 race car while still providing comfort for road driving. This design helps maintain a sleek roofline and ensures a strong connection between the driver and the car.

The car’s dynamic characteristics and setup are primarily developed using simulation tools and feedback from elite AMF1 drivers like Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.

Aerodynamics – F1-inspired drag reduction and downforce

Valhalla’s aerodynamic approach draws from Formula 1, utilizing the entire body shape to create downforce and reduce drag. Unlike F1, Valhalla benefits from active aerodynamic systems at the front and rear, generating over 600kg of downforce at 240km/h. This adaptability maximizes grip, balance, and efficiency based on driving conditions and mode.

Similar to the AMR23 race car, Valhalla features multi-element front and rear wings. The front wing can adjust to reduce drag or increase downforce ahead of the front wheels. The under-floor surface behind the front splitter creates downforce, controllable through active vehicle algorithms. The rear wing remains flat for a clean appearance but can be raised in track mode, with its angle managed to balance downforce and drag.

Inspired by F1 vortex generators, small slotted louvers near the rear wheel act as mini diffusers, increasing downforce. A roof-mounted snorkel supplies air for the engine intake and cooling ducts. F1’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing expertise benefitted Valhalla’s aerodynamics, using similar techniques and tools, including scale models and moving road wind tunnels for comprehensive development.

Materials –  999 carbon fiber monocoques for each unit of Valhalla

AMPT and the AMF1 team applied their F1-inspired carbon expertise to Valhalla, particularly in simulating stiffness and crashworthiness to identify weaknesses before crash testing.

Valhalla’s core structure, designed and engineered by AMPT, prioritizes stiffness and lightness for precise control. This structure is the result of advanced composite technology, utilizing a combination of Resin-Transfer-Moulding process (RTM) and F1-derived autoclave technology to mold upper and lower sections from carbon fiber. The outcome is an exceptionally rigid and lightweight passenger cell that excels in dynamic performance and safety without compromising comfort for the driver and passenger.

Only selected M40s may receive fuel subsidy in 2024, no blanket for all

The introduction of targeted fuel subsidy in 2024 might see only a selected chunk of M40 income group to be given subsidised fuel.

Kenanga Research stated they believe that part of the M40 group may be cut off from subsidised fuel upon the introduction of targeted fuel subsidy due to unsustainable financial burden of the existing setup, where a considerable 35 % of the RM 77.3 billion subsidy in 2022 was utilized for fuel subsidies that substantially benefitted the wealthier T20 group.

The B40 income group, on the other hand, is expected to receive fuel subsidy without discrimination.

Targeted fuel subsidy relies on the new PADU database, where recipients will be identified using a “net disposable income” criterion. This enables the government to further refine fuel subsidy recipients even within a specific income group. PADU is a computerised database that stores and manages information from various government arms and agencies, including LHDN and JPJ.

The government is set to introduce the targeted fuel subsidy when presenting Budget 2024 in Parliament on 13 October 2023, as a replacement for the current blanket fuel subsidy. Expect changes to take effect from 1 January 2024.

Mazda 3 breaks record in Malaysia: Carving a niche market for themselves with the help of a loyal fanbase!

In the C-segment lead by the Honda Civic, you’d expect Mazda 3 to be completely shattered in terms of sales numbers by the powerhouse – and you’re right!

Mazda 3 has no business even trying to go toe-to-toe with the 11th-generation Civic – codenamed FE. We all know who’s winning this battle – especially given the Mazda 3 was released way back in 2019 while the new Civic was released last year.

But, the thing is, neither Bermaz (the distributor) nor Mazda (the manufacturer) are focused on competing with Civic or aggressively pursuing high sales volumes for the Mazda 3. This is because they’re aware that due to it being an imported (CBU) vehicle, they won’t be able to match the locally assembled (CKD) Civic’s price anyway. They’d rather maintain a certain level of exclusivity and count on the loyal fanbase to show up – and they did!

The now 4-year-old Mazda 3 has shattered its own sales records in Malaysia! While the sales numbers are just a fraction of the Civic, it doesn’t matter to Mazda. And, this only proves the BM/BN generation Mazda 3 is aging like fine wine.

In the first quarter of 2023, 314 units of Mazda 3 were shipped out, while an impressive 883 units were registed in the second quarter. This brings it to a total of 1,197 units sold in the first half of 2023, marking an all-time high for the Mazda 3 in Malaysia – meanwhile, the Mazda CX-5 remains the top-selling model for the company, with 3,252 units sold till June 2023.

The Mazda 3’s surge in popularity is a testament to its unique appeal – drawing buyers who value its craftsmanship over obvious practicality and reasoning. It’s timeless design and work of art defies conventional logic.

Equipped with either a 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, it provides a responsive and dynamic driving experience. Even though it may not be the most powerful, it handles corners with finesse, ensuring a comfortable ride for passengers.

Despite the odds stacked against them and other obvious economically better options, the Mazda 3’s popularity remains undeterred. This showcases the distinct preferences of buyers, affirming that each car caters to a specific niche.

In conclusion, the Mazda 3’s record-breaking sales in Malaysia demonstrate that it has successfully carved out its own niche in the market. Its appeal, combined with a committed fanbase, proves that it’s not just a car – it’s a sensation. As the Mazda 3 continues to defy expectations, it’s clear that its legacy is only set to grow stronger.

The Mazda 3 comes in 2 different body specs – Sedan and Liftback. Below are the Mazda 3’s variants offered by Bermaz Malaysia:

Sedan:
1.5 L –  RM 149,000
2.0 L High – RM 155,000
2.0 L High+ – RM 165,000
Liftback:
1.5 L –  RM 149,000
2.0 L High+ – RM 165,000
2.0 L Ignite Edition – RM 174,000

2023 Honda Civic Type R (FL5) debuts in Malaysia – Featuring 319PS/420Nm, 6MT, priced at RM 399,900

The hot hatch that everyone has been waiting for, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R (FL5) has finally been launched by Honda Malaysia, priced at RM 399,900.

The Civic Type R has been well received in Malaysia, from the FD2R to the FK8, and now, the Civic Type R FL5! Has it already sold out? Well, for this year, there’s an allocation of 19 cars, but there will be more next year.

Selection of the 19 fortunate purchasers will be determined by a lottery system, rather than a first come, first served approach. The FL5 is a complete import (CBU) from Honda’s Yorii facility. Considering that there’s a two-year waiting list in Japan, these 19 units are as good as gold.

The FL5 was introduced in Vietnam last October with a price tag of RM474,000, and in the Philippines, it was introduced in January this year for RM517,000. Now, it’s Malaysia’s turn! For nearly RM400k, you too can own the latest Civic Type R.

When compared to the FD2R (RM200,000) and FK8 (RM320,000), you might be surprised that the price has almost crossed the RM400k barrier. That’s nearly RM60k more than the last one.

There’s a new front and rear bumper, honeycomb grille, and improved airflow efficiency, which Honda says is one of the new car’s main focus. However, the overall design is less aggressive than the FK8, with fewer decorative vents and smaller air outlets.

Speaking of efficiency, the wheel size has been reduced to 19 inches compared to the FK8’s 20 inches. Despite the smaller size, the contact patch is wider at 265/30-profile, compared to the FK8’s 245/30).

Inside, you’ll find iconic red seats, a new meter design, and the +R driving mode. While this is a sporty car, the interior is not only luxurious but, most importantly, exclusive, seeing the return of the red floor carpets, which Type Rs are known for.

At the heart of the dashboard lies a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, accompanied by a 9.0-inch infotainment display that also serves as the Honda LogR data logger.

The +R mode which has a dedicated button, is part of the FL5’s driving modes, and when selected, it sets the dampers to their firmest setting for flat, precision handling. The EPS also becomes firmer to deliver maximum road feel to the steering wheel, and throttle response becomes more immediate.

Rev-matching mirrors the Sport setting, the engine sound becomes the fiercest, and the DII (instrument cluster) switches to full track mode.

The power and performance of the FL5 are truly impressive. The KC20C1 2.0-litre turbo engine produces 319hp and 420Nm of torque( 9hp and 20Nm more than the FK8). The 6-speed manual transmission is sure to provide an engaging driving experience, just like the previous model.

The performance metrics show a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.5 seconds, an improvement from the FK8’s 5.8 seconds. However, the top speed is still capped at 275 km/h.

In reality, this 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has been carried over from the FK8 with some slight changes. Most importantly however, it now features a revised turbocharger with compact housing that improves efficiency. The turbine has an optimised blade count (reduced), but the new blade design provides a boost in power and enhances airflow.

In other updates, the engine also now features a bigger radiator, an enhanced cooling fan, and improved engine components including pistons coated with low-friction molybdenum.

This is Kaizen for you – continuous improvement following the Japanese philosophy!

The FL5 is the inaugural Type R to be equipped with the Honda Sensing suite, a collection of ADAS safety features. This includes Forward Collision Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Departure Warning with RDM, Auto High Beam, Adaptive Cruise Control, LKA, and the Lead Car Departure Notification (LCDN).

For the Malaysian market, the FL5 Type R will exclusively be available in the signature Championship White hue. Additionally, like other Honda models, the FL5 Type R comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, along with an aftersales package of five complimentary service labours for up to 5 years or 100k km.

CarTell Speefest prize winner shares why the Bridgestone RE-71RS is the perfect track tyre

The 2023 CarTell Speedfest held back in May was not only a milestone for the team here at Carlist.my and its CarTell community, but an event that marked a notch in our longstanding relationship with premier tyre manufacturer Bridgestone.

Co-hosting the event alongside such a big name famed for providing innovative crucial hardware for a multitude of motorsport disciplines including Formula 1 was a highlight of our year, but their title sponsorship also meant that the winners of the track sessions walked away with lucrative tyre vouchers from Bridgestone.

We caught up with one of those winners, who fielded a matte grey and thoroughly modified F82 BMW M4 that managed to post up a scorching time that landed it 3rd fastest overall. The car itself, a frequent sight at local track days, also happens to be the fastest BMW M4 around the Sepang International Circuit, a title awarded by the Malaysia Book of Records, with its time of 2 minutes 20.549 seconds.

The owner, known to many as Jai, is also one of the founders of the local BMW owners community, M4NTAP. And when it comes to tyres, there are plenty of reasons why the Bridgestone range presented some very appealing options.

We asked him about the BMW community, his car, the track experiences and achievements, as well as the tyres he purchased with the voucher, a set of Potenza RE-71 RS that are positioned to narrow the gap between track and road use.

Can you tell us a bit about your involvement with M4NTAP?

“M4NTAP was founded in September 2020 as a small group of owners that wanted to go for a ‘cendol drive’. From there more people stared coming in and we started to host our own track day around October 2021. I’m one of the four co-founders of the group and it has been a very unique journey for us from a small car group to growing to what it is now.”

Can you tell us a bit about your car and how it was one of the fastest cars at CarTell Speedfest?

“The intention for buying this M4 was always to turn it into a track toy so I started modding it right after I got the car. As it is now it has got 610 horsepower at the wheels with a tremendous amount of other modifications that have a combined cost that’s more than the purchase price of the car itself!

It has been a wonderful track car for us but is still able to be driven on the road. Modifying cars is my hobby, but because I am usually busy organising the events, I leave the driving to the professionals.”

Are these your first set of Bridgestone tyres and why did you choose them?

“To be honest this is my second set of Bridgestone tyres, specifically the RE-71RS. I had heard a lot of positive feedback from other drivers running these tyres, most of which are from Singapore  that drive to Sepang, run laps on the track, and then drive back all on the same set. They were also clocking fast lap times below 2 minutes 20 seconds!

So, my immediate intention after receiving the Bridgestone voucher was to get another set of RE-71RS tyres. As a very amateur driver myself, I think these are best tyre option to have to get the feel of semi-slicks while having the comfort of normal road tyres.”

What has been your impression of the Bridgestone RE-71RS?

“It performs well beyond what Bridgestone claims and I believe the compound and the engineering behind it isn’t something you can get from any other brand.”

Jackpot: Honda WR-V becomes overnight sensation in Malaysia

The Honda WR-V can be summed up in two words – ‘huge success’. Indeed it was a huge success for Honda Malaysia – with over 7,300 bookings and 3,300 units delivered within one month. It’s safe to say that Honda has managed to capture the attention of Malaysians with the A-segment SUV -a first of its kind for a non-national brand here in Malaysia. Assembled locally, it comes in four variants, with prices ranging from RM 89,900 to RM 107,900.

The Honda WR-V is built on a chassis or structural foundation that is derived from the second-generation Honda BR-V, but it has been modified for use in the WR-V model – allowing the WR-V to have its own unique size.  So, in terms of looks, the WR-V has a youthful and rugged look like Mike Tyson from 1987, especially from the rear. The RS variant, priced at RM 107,900, stands out with a sleek chrome front grille and 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.

Inside the cabin, the WR-V offers ample legroom and a spacious boot. Rear occupants have plenty of space to stretch their legs and the 380L boot can handle a good amount of luggage. Getting in and out is easy, thanks to its tall ride height. However, front seat comfort might be a concern for taller individuals.

The interior design may not feel as premium or futuristic, but Honda makes it up by offering a good amount of user-friendly features that suits the needs of many buyers including the infotainment system – which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with the Honda LaneWatch camera while the RS variant offers more features through Honda Connect – allowing owners to start the engine via the app as well as geotracking and other remote capabilities. So, it’s not all that bad.

Under the hood, the WR-V packs a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine, delivering 121 PS and 145 Nm. It handles corners well with minimal body roll, making it a comfortable ride overall. However, when at max capacity, overtaking might require a bit more effort.

The RS variant comes with sportier tuning, including 17-inch tires and tweaked suspension. This leads to a stiffer ride, which might not be ideal for those seeking comfort. In terms of noise insulation, the engine bay is well-insulated, but wind and road noise are still noticeable.

In conclusion, while the WR-V offers Honda’s trademark practicality and roominess, the RS variant may not be the best choice for comfort. You might wanna have a look at the V variant first if you really wanna get a WR-V before deciding that the RS variant is the best for you just because it’s the highest spec. People have different taste and needs, so, it differs for everyone.

Prices of the 4 variants offered in Malaysia:
WR-V 1.5 S – RM 89,900
WR-V 1.5 E – RM 95,900
WR-V 1.5 V – RM 99,900
WR-V 1.5 RS – RM 107,900
