Tesla’s arrival in Malaysia sparks excitement for cross-sector collaboration and Investment opportunities

With the imminent launch of Tesla in Malaysia next week, there is growing anticipation about the potential benefits it may bring to the country.

One individual, who has been advocating for Tesla’s presence in Malaysia since the announcement of their arrival, believes that the impact of having Tesla goes beyond just introducing their cars to the market.

Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz, emphasizes that the collaboration between Malaysia and Tesla extends to various sectors, not limited to electric vehicles (EVs).

Zafrul Aziz reveals that a call is scheduled between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla, before the week concludes.

“There is more than just the EV sector that we are talking about in this potential collaboration,” he explains as reported by Bernama.

The aim is to attract greater investment commitments not only in the automotive sector but also in other sectors that Malaysia can promote effectively. These efforts were highlighted during the soft launch of the International Electric Mobility Showcase (IEMS) 2023, where Zafrul Aziz addressed reporters.

Tesla, renowned for its expertise in designing and manufacturing EVs, is headquartered in Austin, Texas, USA. The official unveiling of Tesla in Malaysia will take place in Kuala Lumpur on July 20, marking its official debut in the country.

In the meantime, Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, the group CEO of the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), expresses his hope that Tesla will participate in the upcoming IEMS 2023, scheduled to be held on October 4-6.

He aspires for IEMS 2023 to secure RM4 billion in green technology and sustainability-focused investment prospects, surpassing the RM3 billion achieved during the previous year’s event.

IEMS 2023 anticipates the participation of around 400 exhibitors from 40 countries, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Sweden, Austria, and the Netherlands. The event is expected to draw 40,000 visitors, further emphasizing the significance of this international showcase.

SPIED: Honda FL5 Civic Type R ‘sudah sampai’ Malaysia?

Ever since the Honda FL5 Civic Type R was globally launched back in July last year, Malaysians have been wondering when it’ll arrive here.

It seems that a few units have been spotted onboard a trailer being transported somewhere here in Malaysia. Its arrival is not really surprising considering the fact that it was recently launched in Thailand.

The price tag, however, had quite the opposite effect – 3,990,000 baht or around RM516,000. In other words, you need to cough up over half a million Ringgit to own the FL5 Civic Type R in Thailand. Hopefully, the price tag won’t be as dramatic here in Malaysia.

The FL5 was labelled as the most powerful Type R ever thanks to its KC20C1 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 330PS and 420Nm of torque. The result? A car that has set the record for the fastest production street-legal front-drive car around Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The fact that the FL5 Civic Type R also came with enhanced bodywork, aerodynamics, sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres, optimised six-speed manual transmission,  upgraded shift gate pattern, helical-type LSD, lighter flywheel, and rev-match system do indeed help to carry Honda’s Type R badge to newer heights.

Looking at the timeline, our best-educated guess in terms of its official launch would be somewhere within the final quarter of 2023. The FL5 is indeed an interesting car, but what about the price tag? Stay tuned for more updates.

Malaysian-built Chery vehicles will be exported – 30k vehicles to be built locally annually

Chery Malaysia recently launched their highly anticipated SUVs and reiterated its ambitious plan to manufacture up to 30,000 vehicles annually for both the domestic market and exports.

However, the company acknowledges that achieving this goal will require some time.

During the launch event, Chery Malaysia’s President, Shawn Xu, explained that they are currently in the initial phase of their plan.

With only two models available and a limited dealer network comprising 31 outlets, they need to rapidly expand their sales and production capabilities. Xu stated that a third model is in the pipeline, which they anticipate will help them approach their target volume.

In line with their growth strategy, Chery announced their intention to introduce the Omoda 5 EV and the Tiggo 7 Pro in 2024. These new models are expected to generate increased demand and contribute to Chery’s overall production volume.

However, specific details about the timeline for reaching the annual target of 30,000 vehicles were not provided. Regarding export activities, Chery plans to establish Malaysia as its regional hub for right-hand drive vehicles, catering to Southeast Asian and Oceania markets.

Xu emphasized that alongside expanding their Malaysian operations, efforts to localise parts supply are underway in preparation for export. While no precise timeline was given, Chery aims to begin exporting RHD vehicles by the second quarter of next year.

Xu further elaborated that Chery aims to enter all major RHD markets worldwide, including Thailand, various regions in South America, and even the United Kingdom. This ambitious plan necessitates the establishment of RHD production facilities to meet the substantial demand for cars in these markets.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupé (and Cabriolet) has been unveiled using ‘conceptual and technical innovations’ from the C-Class and E-Class to place it nicely in between the two as the perfect replacement.

For those looking for a more expressive-looking CLE paired with enhanced comfort, sporty performance, and maximum individuality, the brand’s latest new dream car series might just tick all the right boxes as it was designed to fulfill many of the customers’ feedback from the C and E-Class segments.

Maximising the Sensual Purity design philosophy from Mercedes-Benz, the CLE Coupé shines above the rest with its long wheelbase, stronger-looking A-pillar, shorter body overhangs, muscular side profile, and larger wheels. The result is a more powerful and dynamic-looking machine that ’embodies an emotional statement’ no matter where you look.

Mercedes-Benz simply loves the forward-leaning ‘Shark Nose’ and low-slung bonnet combination together with the sleek LED headlights and 3D radiator grille. With dimensions of 4,850mm long, 1,860mm wide, and 1,428mm high, the new CLE is the largest coupé in the mid-size segment.

Compared with the C-Class Coupé, the new CLE has a 25mm longer wheelbase, 10mm more headroom for the rear passengers as well as 19mm extra width, and a whopping 72mm extra knee room. For all you golf fans out there, it can actually fit three golf bags.

Step inside its luxurious cabin and you’ll be welcomed with a free-standing 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display, an 11.9-inch driver-oriented central display in portrait format, and like always, a 64-colour ambient lighting feature.

Other highlights include a set of sporty front seats developed exclusively for the new CLE, Napp leather loops to open the doors front the inside, and if you want to burn a bit more cash for the finest of tunes, you probably want to splurge on the optional Burmester® 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio.

Looking at the powertrains, all CLE variants are actually mild-hybrids with a choice of four-cylinder petrol or diesel that are turbocharged as well as fitted with the second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG) for added support on the low-speed range as well as ‘excellent power development’. Power output? 204PS and 320Nm for the CLE 200, 258PS and 400Nm for the CLE 300.

Want more power? There’s also the CLE 450 4Matic that is powered with a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol unit that is said to produce 381PS and 500Nm of torque. For this beauty, 0-100km/h is only 4.4 seconds, and for top speed, that’s set at 250km/h.

Future CLE owners can further enhance their machines with options such as the Dynamic Body Control for added agility, Drive Assistance Package Plus for enhanced safety, and even the Ambient Lighting Plus for a more premium interior touch thanks to the additional light band under the instrument panel’s lower edge.

2023 Chery Omoda 5 makes grand launch in Malaysia from RM109k

Finally, Chery Malaysia has made its return official. Just last night, Chery Malaysia held an official launch event introducing the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs as their initial models to lead their local resurgence. In summary, the Omoda 5 offers two variants – the C variant is priced at RM108,800, while the top H variant is available for RM118,800. It’s still up for debate what the C and H stand for, exactly (Cool and Hot?).

Unlike their previous foray, Chery has chosen to enter the market this time without a local partner, opting to cut its own path in a competitive market. Even the mighty BYD chose to partner with major player Sime Darby. Additionally, Chery confirmed that 31 dealerships will be ready to serve new customers by launch date, with more scheduled to open by the end of 2023.

Another point to highlight about Chery’s aggressive plans is their bringing both the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro to market in CKD, locally-assembled form right from the outset with all Chery models sold here to have rolled off the Inokom plant in Kulim. This is opposed to the usual practice of introducing an initial batch of fully imported cars to achieve an earlier launch date, followed by CKD units down the road.

The Omoda 5, their B-segment SUV rival to the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V, features a distinctive design that could be polarising to some. Whether you love or hate its wide studded nose, there’s no denying that it makes a distinct first impression, which is undoubtedly advantageous for the new brand.

That said, remaining parts of the SUV’s body are less likely to divide opinions. It boasts a sculpted shape with blacked-out rear pillars and a full-width strip for the tail, all contemporary design. We’d love to see it given a stealthy blacked out treatment.

Externally, the C and H variants can be distinguished by the red highlights on the front lower grille, side mirrors, lower doors, and rear spoiler of the high-spec H model. It’s rare for a trim package to extend to the wheels, but Chery has done this for the Omoda 5 H. All variants feature LED headlights, tail lights, and daytime running lights (DRLs), but the H trim gains sequential turn signals and an eye-catching light show in the front and rear upon startup.

Measuring 4,400 mm in length and 1,830 mm in width, the Omoda 5 is 70 mm longer and 40 mm wider than a Honda HR-V. Its wheelbase is 2,630 mm, or 20 mm longer than that of the HR-V, suggesting a roomier cabin. A set of rather fetching 18-inch wheels are standard, which can also be had in a single or dual-tone finish.

Under that bonnet you’ll find a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 156 hp (and 230 Nm of torque, explaining the “230T” badge at the rear. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with nine virtual ratios.

Moving inside, the Omoda 5’s dashboard follows the current trend with its co-joined screens, reminiscent of those made popular by Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX. We appreciate the fact that, despite the presence of large twin LCD displays, there are still climate control buttons that buck the trend of relying solely on a cumbersome touchscreen.

The Omoda 5 is well-equipped even in its lower C trim level. Both trim levels come with two 10.25-inch dashboard screens as standard, offering wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.

Other notable features include wireless charging, an angled phone rest for convenient viewing, ambient lighting, dual-zone air conditioning with a PM 2.5 filter, a reverse camera, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated wing mirrors, and proximity sensor keyless entry. Additionally, the Omoda 5 boasts double-glazed windows to enhance noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels.

Opting for the higher H trim level adds full faux leather upholstery as opposed to the mixed fabric combo in the C, a sunroof with a manual sunshade, and an eight-speaker Sony sound system. The H variant also features powered and ventilated front seats and a powered tailgate. Furthermore, a 360-degree camera system is included to assist with parking.

When it comes to safety, both trim levels come standard with a comprehensive advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) pack. It includes lane departure warning and prevention, blind-spot detection, emergency lane-keeping, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, front collision warning and automatic emergency braking (AEB), and automatic high beam.

During the event, Chery Malaysia also revealed its warranty package, which includes a 7-year or 150,000 km coverage for the vehicle alongside a 5 yearsof alternating free service (including free labor).

The engine warranty is an impressive 10 years or one million km. However, it’s important to note that the attention-grabbing engine warranty is limited to the first 3,000 customers. After that, it reverts to a seven-year/150,000 km warranty, aligning with the rest of the vehicle.

Still, if you’re the 3,001st customer or after, paying an extra RM2,000 upfront will still net you the extended 10-year/1-million km engine warranty package – a pretty good deal if you’re still on the fence about Chery’s reliability record.

2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro enters Malaysia as SUV flagship for RM160k

The Tiggo 8 Pro, Chery’s SUV flagship to sit alongside the smaller and more youthful Omoda 5 in Malaysia’s showrooms in 2023, is available in a single Premium variant priced at RM159,800. Does the spearheading 7-seater stand a chance at disrupting the ‘bigger’ SUV market?

Chery’s re-entry into Malaysia has been a long process spanning years. Since then, previews of upcoming models and local spec versions of the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro have been popping in and out of the public eye, making this so-called Grand Launch all the sweeter.

This time around, Chery has chosen to enter the market without a local partner, demonstrating its zeal make their mark on Malaysian market on their own terms. The brand plans to have 31 dealerships ready to welcome customers by launch date, with more promised to open by the end of 2023.

One notable aspect of Chery’s strategy is that the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro are being launched in completely knocked-down (CKD) form, with local assembly at Inokom in Kulim right from the start. So, it’s no wonder its Malaysian re-entry took a little longer than was initially expected.

The Tiggo 8 Pro has undergone several updates since its earlier preview in Malaysia in latter 2022. It features an updated exterior design with a new “galaxy” grille, full-width LED bar at the rear complete with integrated T-shaped third brake lights. The wheels have also been upgraded to 19-inch units.

Inside, the Tiggo 8 Pro showcases a horizontal dash design with modern elements like conjoined screens, inline AC vents, and a high centre console to it a sense of driver-orientedness, though this doesn’t really have performance intentions. The overall interior design is refined with plush materials, impressive build quality, and details reminiscent of European cars double its price.

The Tiggo 8 Pro comes with a 2.0L TGDI four-cylinder engine generating 256 hp and 390 Nm of torque, which already puts it ahead of most rivals. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The SUV is equipped with a comprehensive set of features, including electronic parking brake with auto hold, automatic LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights, multi-colour ambient lighting, electric front seats with ventilation/heating, driver’s seat memory, dual-zone auto air conditioning with rear vents, hands-free powered tailgate, electronic panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

It also incorporates advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning/keeping, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and front collision warning with auto braking.

In terms of safety, the Tiggo 8 Pro stands out by offering nine airbags, including a driver’s knee bag and rear side airbags, a rare addition outside the luxury segment.

Comparisons to the Proton X90 are inevitable, both being three-row SUV designed and engineered in China. True, the Tiggo 8 Pro has a higher price tag but counters that by offering more power from its 2.0T engine. That said, the X90 does have the edge on overall interior space and cargo capacity.

Chery Malaysia also unveiled its warranty package during the joint launch event, which includes a seven-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, five years of alternating “free service” (free labor), and an impressive 10-year or one million km engine warranty for the first 3,000 customers. After that, the engine warranty reverts to the standard seven-year/150,000 km coverage.
