Consumer protection regulation requires workshop operators to display mechanics’ qualifications

Workshop operators are now required to display a list containing the names of mechanics and their qualifications for consumers to access.

According to Bernama, this regulation, part of the Consumer Protection (Workshops Information Disclosure) (Amendment) Regulations 2022, came into effect nationwide on July 1, according to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

The objective of this requirement is to provide consumers with the necessary information to make informed decisions when selecting workshops with qualified mechanics. Workshop owners are encouraged to either hire mechanics with proper qualifications or support their existing mechanics in obtaining the required certifications.

Additionally, operators must clearly indicate the category of spare parts used, whether they are new, used, or reconditioned. This transparency ensures that consumers are aware of the type of parts being used for repairs or modifications to their vehicles.

The amendment, gazetted on June 22, 2022, was initially set to be enforced on July 1, 2022. However, it was postponed for a year until July 1, 2023, allowing affected parties to prepare for the changes.

The enforcement of the Consumer Protection (Workshops Information Disclosure) (Amendment) Regulations 2022 is now in full effect nationwide as of July 1, 2023. Any violations of the regulations may be subject to action under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599).

Mr Bean drove a hydrogen-powered Toyota GR Yaris at Goodwood!

Even in 2023, Mr Bean is still a cool dude and he just got cooler with a Goodwood appearance in a hydrogen-powered Toyota GR Yaris.

That’s right, folks. Rowan Atkinson was at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed to promote alternative fuels and to do that, he came in a very unique Toyota GR Yaris H2.

According to Motor1, he came packing to Goodwood with a specially prepared Toyota GR Yaris with an enhanced engine management system that allows the 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine to run on hydrogen.

The man who’s not only famous for his legendary television antics (as well as daily driving a McLaren F1) said that he currently owns a ‘normal’ GR Yaris and the hydrogen-powered in his own words were “tremendous fun”.

And what’s not to like? The prospect of running a powerful ICE engine in the future that runs much cleaner will certainly give the EVs a run for their money. Toyota is also currently working hard on a GR H2 Le Mans prototype to race in 2026 as well as Formula 1 which is set to switch to alternative fuels in the future.

Rowan Atkinson is also known to be vocal about companies exploring the world of alternative fuels rather than jumping straight to electric in order to save the internal combustion engine. We will always support you, Mr Bean.

Toyota Corolla Cross topples Proton X70 as Malaysia’s best-selling C-segment SUV

The Toyota Corolla Cross has taken over the title from the Proton X70 as the country’s best-selling C-segment SUV.

That’s quite a title to obtain considering the fact that the Proton X70 has been the segment’s ‘king’ since its inception in Malaysia in December 2018. As reported by our sister site, Wapcar, it’s no longer the case in 2023.

For the first half of 2023, Proton stated that 6,116 units of the X70 were sold together with the statement “second highest volume C-segment SUV” in the country. So, what makes the Toyota Corolla Cross first?

Wapcar also reported that the Toyota Bukit Raja plant has produced 6,437 units of the Corolla Cross as of May 2023. Looking at the same time period, the Proton X70’s production numbers from the Tanjung Malim plant sat at 4,857 units.

Considering the fact that the Toyota Corolla Cross is still a newer model compared to the Proton X70, we can safely assume that all of the units are already spoken for when paired with the three-month waiting period.

There are several reasons why people are going for the Toyota Corolla Cross. Despite its higher-selling price from RM130,400 to RM142,000, it’s difficult to find a similar product within its segment that offers high levels of space, comfort, fuel efficiency, and more.

Those factors are further amplified thanks to Toyota’s great aftersales services and even solid resale value. These are also the reasons why the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the best-selling hybrid model here in Malaysia.

On Proton’s side, the X70 is still a worthy car to own if you’re into more power paired with premium finishes for all of its variants. And you can get one of your very own (ready stock at several dealers) from RM98,800 to RM128,800 – a very good deal for an SUV of its nature.

Despite being in the same segment, both the Toyota Corolla Cross and Proton X70 are winners depending on what you’re looking for in an SUV. One is a great deal when it comes to ‘bang for your buck’ while the other is just a great performer overall.

Which is which, it all depends on your preferences and perceptions of things.

Fined for parking in front of own home, “High-Handed” traffic enforcement following operation launch

Residents in Salak South New Village and Desa Petaling, located in the Bukit Bintang constituency, have voiced their complaints about “high-handed” enforcement following the launch of “Ops Respect Traffic Laws” by Kuala Lumpur police.

A town hall session, organized jointly by the Bukit Bintang MCA and DAP branches, was attended by about 80 people who shared their grievances about receiving summonses for various traffic offences in the past two days.

Residents expressed frustration over receiving summonses for parking violations in areas where there were no road lines or clear markings. They highlighted that some of the roads, like Jalan 9, 11, and 13 Taman Salak Selatan, had been without markings for over 40 years. Concerns were raised about the enforcement being conducted in residential areas and the need for proper road markings and prior notice to residents.

Banie Chin, Kampung Salak Selatan MCA vice-chairman, questioned the manner in which the enforcement was carried out, suggesting that it should focus more on commercial centres rather than residents’ parked cars. He proposed involving Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in drawing road lines and notifying residents before strict enforcement is implemented.

Eric Teh, secretary to Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, stated that he would compile a list of summonses and seek an interview with the police to address the residents’ concerns.

According to a recent report by The Star, a total of 26,506 traffic summonses were issued in Kuala Lumpur since July 3, with traffic obstruction being the most common offence. The “Ops Respect Traffic Laws” operation involves 800 personnel and officers and will continue until July 31.
