The new Mercedes-Benz EQG concept was recently unveiled together with the new EQE, AMG EQS, and Maybach EQS SUV concept at the Munich Auto Show. As the nomenclature of the vehicle implies, it belongs in the EQ electric range of the three-pointed star marque and is based on the iconic G-Class.

Although the one displayed at the motor show is still in its concept form, Mercedes said that the model is already in its near-production stage. That means what we are seeing in the photos here should not be that different from the product that will be rolled out to customers, though it would be great if the automaker can still make a few tweaks to retain more of the key elements found in the G-Class going forward.

Mercedes revealed that the EQG is powered by four individually-controlled electric motors positioned close to the wheels with a two-speed gearbox. It is yet to specify the output and electric range of the electric SUV.

The EQG concept follows the same boxy shape, body lines, and circular headlamps of the G-Class. These are combined with the styling cues present in the EQ line. It features a two-tone finish in gloss black and aluminum beam, illuminated front grille showing the central Merc emblem dotted with small three-pointed stars on the background, LED-lined square cover for the spare wheel inspired by the design of an electrical wallbox, and gloss black roof rack with more LED strips. Lastly, it is topped with a set of 22-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a special look.

There’s also no word about the arrival of the EQG’s production version in dealerships but it is expected to happen sometime in 2023 or 2024.
