Proton Exora records 11.5% surge in sales in its farewell year – nearly 200k units sold

Embracing the MPV revolution

In a country that only embraced MPVs in the mid-2000s, Proton broke new ground with the launch of Malaysia’s first homegrown MPV, the Proton Exora, in 2009. Fast forward 14 years, as other MPVs evolved or were retired, the Exora stood its ground, becoming a beloved staple on Malaysian roads. Sadly, its final chapter was penned in October, marking the end of an era.

196,583 Units and done

Over nearly a decade and a half, the Shah Alam plant produced 196,583 units of the Proton Exora. Its spacious design remained a constant, with minor tweaks along the way. The most recent update in 2022 featured the placement of the current roundel badge, a nod to its lengthy stay.

Evolution of powertrain

In the beginning, it came with a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre CamPro CPS engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission. However, the Exora evolved and over the years, it received a 5-speed manual transmission, a CVT automatic transmission, and a turbocharged CamPro CFE engine. The Exora RC2, introduced last year, offered two variants – Executive and Premium, priced between RM 62,800 and RM 69,800.

Go out with a bang!

In its last month of production, the Exora sold 393 units in October. As it takes its final bow, the Exora emerges as the undefeated C-segment MPV sales champion. A total of 3,910 units have found new homes in 2023, showcasing an 11.5% surge in sales.

A farewell, but not goodbye

While the Exora bids farewell, we’ll still see plenty of it on the road. There also won’t be an immediate successor. Plans for a new model based on the Geely Jiaji MPV have been shelved. Instead, the Proton X90 steps up as P1’s sole 3-row model.

Expats guide: How to buy a used car in Malaysia

Malaysia’s diverse culture, thriving economy (meh), and stunning landscapes make it an attractive destination for expatriates. Embracing the thrill of living as an expatriate in Malaysia often comes with the desire for newfound adventures, and what better way to embark on them than with your very own set of wheels?

The road to acquiring a car, however, has its twists and turns, especially for expats. However, buying a used car from CARSOME is easy and transparent, even for expats! CARSOME offers fully refurbished used cars, with at least a 1-year warranty and a 5-day money-back guarantee for added assurance! On top of that, their CARSOME Consultants will guide you throughout the car-buying process, making it simple and stress-free.

If you are considering buying a used car, there are certain requirements and guidelines that you must be aware of. Here’s a comprehensive used car buying guide for expats in Malaysia, outlining the necessary documents, eligibility criteria, and bank loan regulations.

Residency status & documentation

Before purchasing a car in Malaysia, expatriates must ensure they possess the appropriate documentation. This includes a valid passport, a valid visa or work permit, and a valid international driving license. Note that you will also be required to provide proof of employment and a local address for any car loan-related matter.

Eligibility for car loans

Expatriates in Malaysia are eligible for car loans, although certain criteria must be met. Most banks require applicants to be between the ages of 21 and 60, possess a valid work permit or visa, and have a minimum income of RM 3,000 per month. Additionally, some banks may have specific requirements regarding the duration of the expatriate’s employment contract.

CARSOME will assist you with the car loan application process, so you don’t have to worry about it.

Down payment & loan amount

Typically, banks in Malaysia require a down payment of 10% to 40% of the car’s purchase price for expatriates. The margin of financing may be reduced to just 60% to 70% of the value of the car, instead of the usual 90% for most local citizens. This down payment can be paid in cash or through a combination of cash and the trade-in value of an existing vehicle. The loan amount extended by the bank will cover the remaining cost of the vehicle.

There may also be requirements for a guarantor who is most likely to be your employer. However, this guarantor requirement applies to even locals, so don’t feel so bad. In the end, it is up to the bank’s discretion.

Loan tenure & interest rates

Loan tenures in Malaysia range from 1 to 9 years, providing flexibility for borrowers to choose a repayment period that suits their financial situation. Interest rates may vary depending on the bank and the chosen loan package. However, for expatriates, things might be different, loans given are capped at a maximum of 5 years, regardless of whether it’s a new or a used car. Still, you should compare offerings from different banks to secure the most favourable terms.

Required documents for car loan application

This is the list of documents needed for expats to apply for a loan:

✅ Valid passport

✅ Valid driving license

✅ Working permit or residency permit

✅ Copy of employment letter

✅ Latest 3-month bank statements

✅ Latest 3-month payslips

✅ Local (Malaysian) guarantor

Insurance and road tax

In Malaysia, it is mandatory for all vehicles to be insured. Expatriates must obtain motor insurance to cover third-party liability as well as damage to their own vehicle. Additionally, road tax must be paid annually to legally operate a vehicle on Malaysian roads.

When you buy a used car from CARSOME, the fixed price you see listed on our website includes not just road tax, but also 1-year warranty, ownership transfer fee, Puspakom inspection fee, and loan processing fee.

Choosing the right car

Once the necessary documents are in order, expatriates can begin exploring their options for purchasing a car. Malaysia offers a wide range of vehicles, from compact city cars to larger SUVs. Consider factors such as budget, family size, and intended use of the vehicle when making this decision.

You can browse the largest quality used car inventory on CARSOME website or app for any cars that you need, from hatchback to SUV.

Registration and transfer of ownership

Once the car has been selected and the loan approved, the vehicle must be registered with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Malaysia. This process involves completing the necessary forms, providing proof of identity and residence, and paying the required fees. Don’t worry, if you are buying from CARSOME, they will assist you with the paperwork so you can relax and wait for the car to be ready.

In conclusion, purchasing a car as an expatriate in Malaysia is an exciting endeavour that offers a sense of freedom and convenience during your stay. By ensuring all required documentation is in order, understanding the eligibility criteria for car loans, and navigating the registration process, expatriates can smoothly acquire their desired vehicle. With careful planning and adherence to local regulations, driving in Malaysia can be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for expatriates.

Proton X50 achieves milestone: Over 100,000 units sold in Malaysia in 3 years

In 2020, the Proton X50’s arrival in Malaysia generated excitement, even causing extended waiting periods due to high demand. Fast forward three years, and the X50 remains one of the most popular SUVs in its class.

Proton proudly announced the sale of 100,210 units of X50 nationwide, reaffirming its status as a crowd favorite. The momentum continues, with October 2023 alone witnessing 2,021 X50s finding new homes. This milestone all-but affirms the X50’s position as Malaysia’s top-selling SUV, with close to 30,000 units sold this year.

While the X50 secures its place as Proton’s second best-selling model in 2023, it stands only behind the economical option, the Proton Saga. However, the X50 remains unrivaled in its B-segment SUV category, retaining its spot as the best-seller in October.

Under the hood, the X50 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, available in all four variants. The MPI unit delivers 150 PS/226 Nm and features in all except the range-topping Flagship variant. The Flagship variant employs a TGDI power plant, producing 177 PS/255 Nm.

Pricing for the four variants is as follows:

1.5T Standard – RM 86,300

1.5T Executive – RM 93,300

1.5T Premium – RM 101,800

1.5T TGDI Flagship – RM 113,300

Proton also recently launched the limited-edition X50 R3 Edition, starting at RM 125,300.

In its current journey, the Proton X50 is showing no signs of slowing down.

Proton’s next surprise: Proton ‘X80’ could be next-in-line after Proton S70 !

The hype and excitement over the 2023 Proton S70 has just gotten started given the fact that Proton has not officially launched the new sedan yet – though, it’s just around the corner. Somehow, Proton is back in the spotlight – this time it’s for X80. Yes, you read that right.

Proton’s future plans have been blown wide open because an eagle-eyed sleuths at Funtasticko dug up something interesting on a trademark being filed pertaining to a certain “Proton X80”. Apparently, Proton has trademarked ‘Proton X80’ across a range of categories. Let’s take a closer look!

Unveiling the ‘Proton X80’ trademark

The filings covers five categories:

Class 12: Cars, Vehicles, Automobile Motors

Class 16: Printed Matter (Cards, Training Materials, etc.)

Class 20: Displays

Class 25: Clothing (Shoes, Hats, etc.)

Class 35: Advertising (Social Media, Website, etc.)

The million-dollar question: Which Geely model could the X80 take after?

What could the X80 be? Odds are, it’s highly likely gonna be a Geely model, but which one? Considering Geely’s global lineup, we’ve already seen most of their models beautifully adapted

Binyue as the X50
Boyue as the X70
Haoyue as the X90
Emgrand as the S70

Given the X-prefix tradition, it’s pointing straight towards an SUV.

Let the speculations….BEGIN!

Next-gen Toyota GR86 rumours: Independent development of hybrid powertrain? Is this the end of the Toyota-Subaru collaboration?

The rumour

Japanese automotive publication, Best Car Web has reported that Toyota is already in the early stages of developing the next-generation GR86, a surprising departure from its collaboration with Subaru. The model may feature a turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine, similar to the ones in the GR Corolla and GR Yaris, marking a shift away from the familiar flat-four boxer engine.

The publication also went on to suggest a potential incorporation of a hybrid powertrain, which could significantly boost the power output. With the addition of an electric motor, the next-gen GR86 may produce close to 325 PS, a substantial increase from the current generation’s 237 PS generated by the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA24 unit.

According to reports, Toyota may be steering the development of the next-gen GR86 independently. While this development may prompt speculation about the future of the Subaru BRZ, and its partnership with Subaru,  it’s important to note that Toyota’s involvement in the project does not necessarily signal the end for the BRZ. It is too early to draw conclusions because after all, these are just rumours.

The history

The development of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ began in 2007 when Toyota and Subaru entered into an agreement to jointly develop a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive, entry-level sports car. The project aimed to combine Toyota’s expertise in front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicles with Subaru’s proficiency in boxer engines and all-wheel-drive technology. The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ were officially introduced to the market in 2012.

The decade-long Toyota-Subaru partnership

The partnership between Toyota and Subaru, forged in 2007, has given birth to some of the most beloved sports cars of our time. The collaborative effort aimed to combine Toyota’s expertise in handling dynamics with Subaru’s renowned boxer engines and all-wheel-drive technology. The result? The world was introduced to the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ – with both debuting in 2012, marking the beginning of a successful collaboration in the automotive industry.

These lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports cars quickly captured the hearts of automotive enthusiasts worldwide. Praised for their exceptional driving dynamics, balanced chassis, and driver-focused experience, the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ became icons in the realm of affordable sports cars and amassed a cult following.

Sharing a common platform, these siblings bring distinct styling, tuning, and branding to the table. Their commonality lies in the shared boxer engine architecture, contributing to a low center of gravity that enhances their agility on the road.

Evolution of the Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ H2

Over the years, both Toyota and Subaru have continued to refine and update their offerings. The result has been improved power, handling, and the incorporation of cutting-edge technology, ensuring that the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ remain at the forefront of the sports car segment.

In 2020, Toyota and Subaru reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration, leading to the introduction of the second-generation Toyota, now known as the GR86 and Subaru BRZ a year later.

What’s next?

Looking ahead, As the Toyota-Subaru partnership continues to evolve, both Toyota and Subaru have expressed a shared interest in exploring electric powertrains and electrified vehicles so we can anticipate further joint projects, shared technologies, and potentially introduce us to a faster, and more higher-end sports car.

Overall, the Toyota-Subaru partnership has demonstrated how successful collaborations between automakers can result in the creation of iconic and beloved vehicles. Their joint ventures have not only been commercially successful but have also contributed to the automotive community.

As it stands, both the existing GR86 and BRZ are esteemed for their driver-centric performance, offering enthusiasts an exceptional driving experience.

The official prices for the GR86 & BRZ sports car twins in Malaysia are:

Toyota GR86

GR86 MT – RM 295,000

GR86 AT – RM 305,000

Subaru BRZ

BRZ MT – RM 249,245

BRZ AT – RM 259,245

Hmmmm…but what about Mazda MX-5?

Perodua revises both production and sales targets for 2023, with less than 2 months till new year

In an optimistic move, Perodua has revised its production and sales targets for 2023. The company is now aiming to produce 338,000 units, with an anticipated sales volume of 325,000 vehicles by the end of the year. This upward adjustment is attributed to improved parts supply by auto vendors and a robust demand for Perodua vehicles.

At the beginning of 2023, Perodua had initially set a production target of 330,000 units and a sales goal of 314,000 vehicles. This decision was influenced by the positive sales momentum generated in 2021, thanks to the sales tax exemption extension and the popularity of their latest model, the Perodua Axia.

Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President and Chief Executive Officer of Perodua, expressed satisfaction with the company’s recent performance, noting that they achieved their highest-ever production and sales figures in a single month of October. A remarkable 35,111 units were produced, and 33,836 units were registered in the same month. While only 22,974 units were produced and 24,849 registered in October of last year.

Year-to-date statistics from January to October 2023 reflect progress, with Perodua producing 280,452 units and registered 267,063 units reflecting a 22% and 20.2% increases respectively, from the same period in 2022.

Dato’ Sri Zainal concluded by saying, “For now, we are focusing on maximizing our potential in both production and sales, so that our customers will receive their Perodua vehicles faster,”
